Traditional but modern: Oak Parquet Flooring is in vogue
Posted on December 10th, 2009 No commentsMy first house had oak parquet flooring, and as we could not afford carpets for some years, the warm look of oak overcame the lack of carpeting. We just had one small rug, as that was all we could afford. Things got better after that, and we had carpets, including some very fashionable shaggy pile carpets later on. But now oak parquet is back in fashion! And with a vengeance, as people look for that minimalist look, and throw out their carpets to replace them with wood flooring, mostly oak, but some walnut. This is now the case with oak parquet flooring and in fact any wooden flooring, be it oak, walnut or the new engineered wood flooring.
Oak is a fine material. It is very strong, having been used to build the ships of the English Navy from Elizabethan times till the advent of steel. It is a strong and durable material, ideally suited to flooring in areas which get constant use. Hardwood floors are very pleasant in summer, but are not so warm in winter, so you need to get some fleecy lined slippers to go with the flooring.
Actually, Oak parquet flooringis available from any firm that supplies wood flooring, but you need to make sure you get A, B or C grade wood – lower grades are of very poor quality. You can install the flooring yourself with a little care and without any hassles. You can chooses from a large range such as Fontainebleau, Haddon Hall and Herringbone.
Normally, oak is available in either white or golden finish, either with a hand-scraped or oiled or lacquered finish. They all look very good.
Wooden floors do not to be maintained really, just kept clean. Gone are the problems and cost of shampooing carpets. Just make sure you use the correct cleaning fluids, though, and follow instructions carefully. Unfinished oak parquet is not at all very expensive you can choose the finishing accordingly. It takes a little time before the floor can be used and it takes a little more time if the floor suffers from dampness. You need to get the substrate dry before laying the wood.
