• Must Know Baby Shower Tips for Second Baby

Holding a baby shower is a fun way to help new moms and dads to have a smooth start to being parents. It is also a wonderful way for family and friends to show their love and support. In the past, having a second-baby shower has been frowned upon, since the parents are likely to already have the big items like high chairs and changing tables. However, it has become more acceptable to hold showers for a second baby, but with certain modifications.

You might also make it a “baby” baby shower – as in a shower focusing on those small, basic items that are always going to be needed, like burping cloths, diapers, and other essentials. You might ask the parents to list whatever items they never got or need to replace from the first time around. Or, instead of a baby shower, you can have a mom shower, asking guests to bring gifts that mom will appreciate as her delivery date approaches. She’ll appreciate receiving something soothing like aromatherapy candles, or even something for day-to-day use, like a soft robe.

You might want to make the shower focused on mom, reminding her that she will not be pregnant forever with gifts like wine or her favorite hard liquor, or savory salty snacks she may have had to give up. The guests might choose to pool together to buy a gift certificate for something extravagant like a day for two at the spa or a fancy dinner – but be sure to include babysitting arrangements. You might also consider sitting down with the father-to-be and the guests, prior to the party, to draw up a dry-erase calendar with offers of assistance to the new mom.

There are many things you can do that will be appreciated, like getting the house organized while mom and baby are in the hospital, taking the older child to and from school (especially during that first week) or helping mom and dad juggle kids while doing errands. After being sure to get down all the names and phone numbers of the helpers, present the finished calendar to mom at the shower. In some cases, neither the baby nor mom needs anything new. Or, consider having a simple party, featuring good food, music, and the mom’s loved ones.

You could ask the guests to buy baby items, smaller items like diapers and clothing, and then bring them to donate to a women’s charity or shelter. Another idea for a second-baby shower is to hold a “freezer” party, with guests bringing food that can go in the freezer or else be easily stored. This will be of great help to the mom as she gets closer to her due date and during the first week or so after the birth. Make sure that mom knows about the shower ahead of time so she can determine if she has enough room for everything, and also pick a day for the shower which is close to her due date.

Lastly, it is acceptable to hold a full, as-if-it-were-the-first-baby shower in the case of a “caboose” baby – one who, as the name implies, is being born several years after the last child. Many times even the “big” items will no longer be around, or will need safety updates, so mom and dad will appreciate all the help they can get.

Even if the baby shower is small or minor in terms of gift-giving, the most important thing to remember is that it is an opportunity to show the mom-to-be your love for her and her little one.
