Men who suffer from prostate cancer seek alternative methods of treatment
Posted on September 23rd, 2009 No commentsIn recent years, the number of men who have prostate cancer have opted to go with a different choice of treatment – holding their breaths.
Men with tumours that are small that develop gradually over time often go for regular examinations and then only if the condition deteriorates do they begin treatment – AKA: “active surveillance” or “watchful waiting”.
A large number of studies are being conducted world wide that spot light on this process known as watchful waiting. These studies have been designed to provide men with added definite answers when it comes to ascertaining the pros and cons between the stress of enduring life with Prostate Cancer and the prominent repercussions of radiation & surgery.
Due to more men being screened and as a result, more low-risk cancers are being identified, the option of watchful waiting is becoming ever more popular amongst those who are diagnosed with the illness.
More than half the worldwide population of men will have cancer cells in their prostate by the time they turn eighty, and most of which will not have been diagnosed. Never the less, only a small portion (around 3%) will pass away from cancer of the prostate.
Prostate tumours are mainly small and slow-growing and the bulk of the men who develop them will pass away as a result of something else.
Roughly 60% of the male polulation that are diagnosed with the illness are potential candidates for active surveillance if they opt for this choice of ‘treatment’.
A large amount of pharmacology studies being conducted (including the clinical data management) that are aimed at establishing an geniuine cure for the disease, one of which was carried out recently at one of Europe’s leading CROs. The main aim of the study (drug trials) was to determine the effects the body had on the study drug. This was a new drug developed with the anticipation that it would have fewer side effects than the treatments currently available on the market. The study drug is not available by prescription or as an over-the-counter medication but is currently under research in other clinical trials. The outcome of this research study is yet to be established.
