Winter is naturally the coldest season, and everyone needs their home to be the cosy place they can come home to and be warm in. Whether you live in a very cold climate, or simply gets winters which are mild enough to be called nippy, there are inexpensive methods for maintaining a toasty living environment using interior design.

Firstly, you need to make sure that your house is well insulated. All drafts must be stopped in their tracks. This means reviewing your window panes and ensuring there are no air leaks that could cause cold drafts in a room. There is special insulation padding that you can put around window panes, and even under doors to prevent extra air getting in. An effective way of warming the home is to install heated flooring. This will create a lovely sense of warmth to the home, especially living areas that are tiled or wooden.

Installing under floor heating can be quite costly, so if you cannot afford that route, then another effective way to warm up your home is to cover as many of the exposed areas as possible in carpeting. There are lovely rugs and runner carpets that you can purchase, sometimes quite inexpensively, if you know where to look. Try and keep some interior design savvy by sticking to a general colour theme and style. Remember that darker colours will stay cleaner for longer. Thicker pile rugs will be warmer, and luxurious to walk on.

Heavy, fully lined curtains significantly help in warming the home up. They should be kept open during the day to allow as much light as possible through. During the evening the heavy curtains are pulled shut, which then enables them to trap all the heat into the home. There are many beautiful curtains that you can choose from, all fully based upon your personal style. Keep in mind that darker curtains will absorb the heat more, and will keep the home warm.
