Incredible Sounding CD Mixing and Mastering for Audio CD Projects
Posted on October 31st, 2009 No commentsCD mastering is one of the best secrets of the best mastering engineers today. As most everything is mixed in the digital realm, top producers will do what’s called layback mastering. This is where the digital version is converted back into an analog signal so it can be mastered through original analog processors, though in many instances it is also recorded to an two-track system to get the warmth that analog tape gives to the project. It also takes the harshness away from all digital recordings, and can even out the low end giving the bottom frequencies that nice analog sound.
There are pros and cons but the advantages are worth it. Analog mastering can cost a bit more than traditional digital mastering, since it takes additional time and there are other costs for the analog tape, but for important projects, it can be the final step in achieving the top quality for the project. Since digital recordings can seem more brittle to a lot of listeners because regardless of how loud the sound gets, digital always gives you flat reproduction. Analog tape, on the other hand, softens as the signal increases in level, so heigh end peaks are rounded rather than clipped, which turns into a warm, nice feel as the harmonic series is balanced out. It is a modified signal from the original which the human ear finds nice to listen to. Also, a hotter input signal will create a bigger effect. As the top ranges soften up first, this means that as the signal goes up, the highs will naturally smooth out a bit, creating a less brittle, and a nicer recording. This is the beauty of analog mastering.
There are various mastering houses around the United States that have the equipment to do layback mastering, however, you also need to have a solid professional with the proven experience to get optimal end product possible with the equipment. I have sampled a few recording studios and one of the best is www.stevethomasmastering.com. He is a top layback CD mastering engineer, yet he also has done thousands of albums as a mixing engineer as well. Not only that, his quality rivals some of the most expensive mastering studios in the world. If you already have someone you are working with there’s nothing wrong with that. But, I would definitely to look him up.
