There Are Travel Deals To Be Found in Cancun
Posted on October 23rd, 2009 No commentsPrior to the Seventies, the vacation destination known as Cancun was out in the country. Things got interesting when the Mexican government made the decision to create a resort that would appeal to international tourists. In the beginning it was necessary to advertise the place with super travel deals in order to entice vacationers to the city.
Now, less than 40 years later there are well over 100 hotels along a several-mile stretch called the Hotel Zone. The town is now a major city with an urban downtown, major shopping areas and world-class dining. In the slow economy, many of the hotels are offering Cancun travel deals and you can find lodging at most any budget range.
Do be aware that the Yucatan Peninsula can be rather humid, with high heat in the summertime. Next time I go, I’ll look hard at planning the trip for the months between late Fall and Spring.
Speaking of traveling, one creative gift idea for family or friends who are celebrating a special occasion is to give them travel gift vouchers. If you buy the right voucher, you can pay in advance for certain airfares or hotel costs, car rentals and admission prices to theme parks and museums.
The use of a travel gift voucher seems to be somewhat more popular in Europe than in the U.S. They are not for everybody, but they can be a unique gift option in some cases.

Tips On Pre Owned Office Workstations
Posted on October 23rd, 2009 No commentsIf you are just setting up a new business venture, no matter how large or small, you will find yourself saddled with a lot of overhead expenses. Unfortunately, there is no way around that. It is true that you have to spend money to make money. Your office is part of the first impression that potential clients get of you and your enterpise, and therefore, you need to make sure that it looks good. Thankfully, if you purchase used office cubicles, you can create a professional look without breaking the bank.
Used office workstations is a great way to achieve a high quality look without paying the requisite high price. You may find the perfect piece at a deep discount because of a minor cosmetic blemish.
For example, perhaps you want to find a huge wooden desk for yourself. Looking at a second hand store or a used office workstations dealer should give you a piece that you want for a fraction of the cost.
A lot of times, more established executives will discard their workstations because it is no longer in style or because a wooden desk was scratched or had something spilled on it. If you can find a piece like this and fix it up, you can save yourself a fortune.
To find these amazing deals on excess or old office workstations, you shouldn’t have to look too far. In many large cities, there will be at least one bulk office workstations dealer that stores matching inventory from office remodels or fire sales.
You should also be able to buy cubicle walls from him. If you would rather go for a unique look for your office, you should spend a few days exploring your locality’s rummage sales and thrift stores. In no time at all, you should have all the pre-owned office workstations you want to make your workplace look great.

What you should know about glycemic index
Posted on October 23rd, 2009 No commentsApplying GI to real-life diets is complex, weigh all information before relying on glycemic index.
If you check different sources on the GI of foods, the numbers don’t always match.
The glycemic index takes into account only the type of carbohydrate, not the amount of carbohydrate, in a usual serving. Carbohydrates can be more concentrated in some foods than others. For example, chocolate cake has 52 grams of carbohydrate in a usual serving, while carrots deliver only 6 grams of carbohydrate in a serving. So even though the glycemic index of carrots is higher (47, vs. 38 for cake) chocolate cake is going to have a much greater total effect on blood sugar, because it takes 81 servings of carrots to equal the carbohydrate in a serving of cake.
The GI in a given food can vary, depending on where it is grown and how it is processed and cooked. Australian potatoes have a higher GI than American potatoes. In general, the more processed the food, the higher the Glycemic Index.
Even cooking pasta for a longer time can raise the Glycemic level.
Generally, whole grains have a lower GI than refined grains. But glycemic index rankings are often confusing:
Bran flakes and Cheerios have a GI of 74. Shredded wheat is 75, and Fruit Loops, 69.
Long-grain white rice averaged 56 in 10 studies (it ranges between 41 and 64), while brown rice averaged 55 (50-66).
The average GI of white bread in six studies was 70 and of whole grain bread was 71.
And, ironically, sugars have a lower GI than starches, because starches are made up totally of glucose molecules, and sugars are not. So Coca-Cola has a lower GI than Grape-nuts flakes.
Studies that establish the Glycemic Index of foods measure the response to a food consumed all by itself. But most of us don’t eat like that. What’s important is predicting the effect of the food as part of a meal.
Experts disagree on the value of the Glycemic Index.
The American Diabetes Association says that “the relationship between glycemic index and glycemic load and the development of type 2 diabetes remains unclear at this time.”
The Canadian and Australian Diabetes Associations have endorsed GI as a tool for improved blood glucose control. Some dietitians who work with people with diabetes recommend that their clients address other diet issues first, such as total carbohydrate and meal spacing, then try the GI concept to see if that improves blood sugars further.
There’s no doubt that different foods produce different glucose responses, but the total carbohydrate has much more of an effect than the Glycemic Index.
If you have hard time using GI diets, a better approach is to eat close to the farm. Avoid highly refined foods and focus on lean meats, beans and legumes, whole grains and fresh fruits and vegetables.

Ice Fishing Over the Years
Posted on October 23rd, 2009 No commentsHave you ever listened to ice fishing fanatics lament about how tough ice fishing used to be? They seem to really value all the advances in recent years in the quality of gear that is available to them. I’m curious whether or not they secretly believe the new guys to the sport are sort of chickens because of how comfy they have it now.
The reminiscers aren’t actually all that old. Many are middle aged people who are thinking back to their childhoods when going ice fishing meant you were going to be cold. Period. There was no way around it. They complain about using a chisel to create the hole in the ice and donning layers and layers of clothing. They recall wearing as many pairs of socks as they could fit inside their boots!
The clothing has improved a great deal. Boots will now keep your feet warm at 25 degrees or more below zero. There are all kinds of new fabrics, which are much less bulky but very warm. There’s polartec, thinsulate, polypropylene, thermaloft and something else new every winter. A single pair of socks will keep you warm now, too.
It seems that chisels are a tool of the past. Now the holes are created with ice augers, even electric or gas powered augers. And with their portable ice fishing shacks the anglers get to move from spot to spot on the lakes to locate where the fish are biting. Years ago this was not very feasible without a ton of extra work. I’m guessing the folks who have a fancy ice fishing house are pretty stationary still, but with the luxury that is often built into those big shelters, I bet they don’t mind at all.
I live in Minnesota and there are plenty of ice fishing fans living here. Many of them still choose to use an ice fishing house rather than a more portable shelter. You can see many of these houses scattered on the lakes when you drive by. Clearly the communities of winter anglers are a blend of many traditions who enjoy talking about the good old days.
They all seem to agree that something that has remained the same over the years is the reason people enjoy going fishing on the ice. Some people go just to party, but most go because it feels great to be outside in the winter. They enjoy the overall experience – the fishing, the snow, the comraderie, and the challenge of braving the elements.
