Rebuild a big block engine

One of the most remarkable engine ranges ever built was the Chevy Big Block V8, which had capacities ranging from 350 to 502 cubic inches. These were big and heavy engines, of pretty basic design.

To start with, in the late 50s, Chevrolet used a combustion chamber in the cylinder instead of in the cylinder head, but this was replaced by an orthodox chamber in the Mark IV engines which went into production in 1965. In those days, the smallest V-8 in the Big Block units had increased to 396 cu in.

These were still basic engines, but they were strong, although they can’t compete with modern engines in power, gas mileage or emissions. Not surprisingly, the Chevy Big Block V8 went out of production when emission regulations came into force – these engines could not meet the regulations.

The production engines retained cast iron blocks, but you can still get a |street or race car with one of these – up to 1,000 bhp with supercharging.

What is the best way to start? Get the engine with the best big block Chevy specs you can. Then, get an old Chevy V-8, then you will want to strip it down, get all the parts inspected to make sure they are OK, and get the cylinders bored out 0.040 in to make sure that you are starting with new parts. This means new pistons of course. Then, you will replace all parts that are worn out, like bearings, valves and valve springs, although you may also need to get the crankshaft reground.

Or, you can buy an aluminum block and heads, and build the engine from there – this would be best Chevy Big Block V8 for racing, and will be a great basis for a very powerful engine.
