Ways to Treat Bedbugs
Posted on August 29th, 2009 No commentsThere are so many ways for getting rid of bed bugs. The most convenient for you will be by contacting an exterminator to deal with the infestation. But there are many do-it-yourself ways that you can choose from: steam cleaning, extreme heat, insecticides, diatomaceous soil, and mattress cover.
Steam cleaning is an effective bedbug treatment. The only problem is that not all surfaces can be steam cleaned. Check first if the surface that you are about to clean can withstand this method.
Exposing the infested mattress, linens, or furniture under the sun for hours can do the trick. But first, scrub and vacuum each surface. When discarding the vacuum bag, put this inside a plastic bag to stop transfer of the bedbugs. Before bringing the exposed material inside your house, check for bedbugs again.
Bedbug insecticides come in sprays or in dust forms. Choose which one is suited for you. It is important for you to carefully read and understand the product label and the instructions. Observe utmost care in applying the insecticide.
Another method of bedbug treatment is the use of diatomaceous soil. This contains fossils of single-celled algae which has jagged edges. The edges can kill bedbugs that come into contact with the soil. Leave the soil for a few days in areas that you are sure to have bedbugs passing by. Never worry because the particles in the soil are too small to cause any harm on you. After a few days, vacuum the soil off and dispose of the vacuum bag properly.
If it is just your mattress that is infested with bedbugs, you can buy a vinyl or fabric mattress cover. This type of mattress cover has zippers along the sides. This seals the mattress inside making sure that no bedbugs will come in and out of the mattress. The bedbugs will not be able to bite you. Without food in at least 6 months, the bedbugs will eventually die.

Aluminum Fishing Boats
Posted on August 29th, 2009 No commentsHas the time come to expand your fishing horizons, and to seek out that perfect fishing boat. If its just for a family outing or more towards the devoted angler, the aluminum fishing boats have become the number one choice.
It can be costly to purchase a brand new fishing boat, so here’s a few ideas to get on the first step towards owning a craft.
Of course, there is the thriving second-hand market for boats, parts, and marine related accessories. If living locally to a boating community, it should be possible to visit a boat brokerage company to look-over the latest stock. If that’s not possible, view one of the thousands of print or online classified ads. Although, there are still cheaper options to note.
If looking to purchase a vessel on a shoe string budget than it might be an advantage to seek out repossessed boats for sale. Often available at knock-down prices. It can become a tremendous opportunity to purchase a small fishing boat, that’s still fairly new and in good condition. Although, caution is still necessary with repo boats, as if the owner expects the craft to be seized, it’s likely that maintenance is going to be neglected, and the craft is going to be run until its on its last legs.
For the DIY enthusiast, there’s the option of building a fishing boat with a suitable set of aluminum boat plans. There are a variety of companies that offer a fine selection of self-build plans, patterns, and kits. Although most plans are designed and intended for the novice builder in mind, it is an advantage in the construction process if the builder has some knowledge and skill in welding.

How to clean creosote off fireplace glass
Posted on August 29th, 2009 No commentsI recently bought a high-efficiency fireplace (the Brentwood by Lennox). I was so happy to get it and was really looking forward to having lots of fires all winter long.
But when I first began having fires in my new fireplace, I thought I had somehow ruined it! The glass (actually ceramic) was “stained” brown, and no matter how hard I scrubbed, or what cleaning products I had on hand that I used, the glass was still stained, and it seemed like there was no way to get it off.
I looked in the instruction manual that came with my Brentwood fireplace, and it said I should go to the store where I got my unit to buy special cleaning products to get the creosote off. I was thinking, hmmmm, must be some crazy chemicals to get this stuff off … probably expensive, too.
I decided to look online first, to see about what it might cost, research it a little, maybe purchase it online if I find a good deal.
In the process of looking around, I found someone who wrote in a forum that you could use the ashes from the fire to clean the glass. I was pretty skeptical, but I decided to give it a try.
I got a paper towel, wet it and dipped it in the ashes, and after a bit of work, yes, the “stain” did come off. Great, I thought! I don’t have to buy any products!
What I have learned since then that if you use WARM water, it comes off VERY EASILY. It really is amazing!
You don’t have to buy any special products. Just use the ashes from your fireplace to clean the window, then finish up with a damp newspaper … works like magic!
