• Garden Cushions

Chair cushions add needed softness to hard wooden kitchen and dining room chairs, but choosing dining room chair cushions that don’t overpower the kitchen set isn’t easy. Although you can purchase a set of chair cushions for $5 at the local dollar store, they may not match your room’s decor or complement your style. Chair cushions that are cheaper have less durable fabric, thin padding and poor workmanship.

You will be rewarded with a set that lasts longer and is far more comfortable if you take the trouble to choose well-made, quality decorative chair cushions. You must take these things into account when choosing chair cushions for wooden chairs. Pick the right size for the seat – if the cushion is too small, it will be uncomfortable. It will look builky if it is too large. The wear on the fabric from the edges of the chair seat and will cut the life of your cushions.

Be certain that if there are ties or straps they are sewn into the cushion’s seam. Chair ties must be strong enough to withstand pulling and tugging when people sit and stand. Ties have a much better chance of staying attached if they are sewn into the seam.

To make it easy to keep them clean, buy seat cushions treated with stain guard. Investing in a can of stain resist or stain guard make it easier to keep them looking fresh and new should you find the perfect cushions aren’t stain resistant. Ultimately this kitchen belongs to you and it is the place where your children eat their meals, isn’t that so? Choose washable chair cushions – or one with removable, washable covers. Some spills are bound to soak in, even if you use stain guard. Your life will easier if you are able to put your chair cushions into the water. Pick cushions in a durable fabric that will stand up to the wear of lots of seats on the seat.

Good choices for fabric that wears like iron are corduroy, denim, chintz, canvas and duck. Embellishments like rolled edges, piping or ruffles need to be securely sewn into the seam between the cushion’s top and bottom. Check the seam closely for breaks or gaps, giving a tug on the ruffle or piping to be certain it won’t easily loosen. Tufted cushions are pretty – but they can be uncomfortable if you sit on them for long periods of time. If you choose a natural cushion to ensure that any button on all joints through a variety of levels of a chair cushion are sewn in order to avoid the loss of peristalsis button to bottom.

  • Creating a Raised Bed

Posted on February 19th, 2009 Mark No comments

If your current planting goals involve plants that require good water drainage, I am sure you know how frustrating it is to have a garden that just will not cooperate. Some plants can handle the excess water that comes about from being in an area that does not drain properly. In fact, it might just cause them to bloom more lushly. However, other plants do not cope as well, and it will cause them to die a gruesome, bloated death. You should always find out about the drainage required for every plant you buy, and make sure that it will not conflict with any of the areas you are considering planting it in.

In order to test how much water your designated patch of soil will retain, dig a hole approximately ten inches deep. Fill it with water, and come back in a day when all the water had disappeared. Fill it back up again. If the 2nd hole full of water is not gone in 10 hours, your soil has a low saturation point. This means that when water soaks into it, it will stick around for a long time before dissipating. This is unacceptable for almost any plant, and you are going to have to do something to remedy it if you want your plants to survive.

The usual method for improving drainage in your garden is to create a raised bed. This involves creating a border for a small bed, and adding enough soil and compost to it to raise it above the rest of the yard by at least 5 inches. You will be amazed at how much your water drainage will be improved by this small modification. If you are planning to build a raised bed, your prospective area is either on grass or on dirt. For each of these situations, you should build it slightly differently.

If you want to start a raised garden in a non grassy area, you will not have much trouble. Just find some sort of border to retain the dirt you will be adding. I have found that there is nothing that works quite as well as a few two by fours. After you have created the wall, you must put in the proper amount soil and steer manure. Depending on how long you plan to wait before planting, you will want to adjust the ratio to allow for any deteriorating that may occur.

If you are trying to install a raised bed where sod already exists, you will have a slightly more difficult time. You will need to cut the sod around the perimeter of the garden, and flip it over. This may sound simple, but you will need something with a very sharp edge to slice the edges of the sod and get under it. Once you have turned it all upside down, it is best to add a layer of straw to discourage the grass from growing back up. After the layer of straw, simply add all the soil and steer manure that a normal garden would need.

Planting your plants in your new area should not pose much difficulty. It is essentially the same process as your usual planting session. Just be sure that the roots do not extent too far into the original ground level. The whole point of creating the raised bed is to keep the roots out of the soil which saturates easily. Having long roots that extend that far completely destroys the point.

Once you have plants in your new bed, you will notice an almost immediate improvement. The added soil facilitates better root development. At the same time, evaporation is prevented and decomposition is discouraged. All of these things added together makes for an ideal environment for almost any plant to grow in. So do not be intimidated by the thought of adjusting the very topography of your yard. It is a simple process as I am sure you have realized, and the long term results are worth every bit of work.

Do you have a half hour or longer commute? If so, you may feel like you’re wasting 5 hours a week with the task of driving. Many people do unsafe things like talking on a cellphone, text messaging, even reading the newspaper while they drive. Why? To regain some of that lost time. But there are plenty of safer ways to get something accomplished while you’re stuck in traffic.

Relax. This ought to be the easiest one, but sometimes isn’t. Turn on some music, drive a little slower and just use the time to relax. Remind yourself that everybody needs a little down time, so that’s productive, too. You’ll probably find this a lot easier to do part of the time, if you do something else at other times, so here are a few ideas.

    • Listen to an audiobook. Whether it’s just the novel you don’t have time to read or a business book to help your career or finances.
    • Brush up on a foreign language. Publishers like Pimsleur and Berlitz offer CDs, tapes and even downloadable MP3s specifically designed for learning a language while you drive. Here’s a useful skill that also helps sharpen the brain generally.
    • Listen to news or talk radio. No matter your interest, there’s probably a talk radio program available to fit – from personal advice to pets to cars to cigars, talk radio is about a lot more than just current events. (Just remember when you’re ready to call in to a talk radio program that the number 4 tip in my list of 12 tips for calling a talk radio show is “don’t use a cellphone!” Wait for the phone call until you’re out of the car.)

  • Locating Ugly Business Communications

Communication lies at the heart of any business. If it is true that experts are people who have made lots of mistakes then I am a super expert. There will be light-speed effective communication around the globe using satellites and what we might perceive as infinite bandwidth. A little while ago I was involved in a project where we had to redevelop part of a web site.

This is not an uncommon problem in business. Is it true that not everyone can be trusted with information? Many people would agree, some would go so far as to say that humans cannot be trusted with information, but why? Well, information is power and if you power-up those who cannot control their integrity levels or choose not to, then in a way giving them the information makes you an accessory to their actions.

Soon, we will have super small devices that operate by voice and eventually by thought. I’ve often read in books about writing that you should think of yourself having a conversation. Of course, on the flip side is the dirty word of secrets and many folks who are not privy to secrets feel disrespected because they are not trusted and therefore, do not give their 100% at work. Is it true that not everyone can be trusted with information? Many people would agree, some would go so far as to say that humans cannot be trusted with information, but why? Well, information is power and if you power-up those who cannot control their integrity levels or choose not to, then in a way giving them the information makes you an accessory to their actions.

And you will have holographic projection technologies using spectral imagery. There is a simple thing that can be done to improve any businesses communications and yet few businesses ever pay any attention to it. As a draughtsman I quickly had to learn that you must assume the person who was looking at your drawing knew nothing.
